THE PROGRAM AT UNITED FATHERS OF AMERICA

United Fathers Program Information
Each year countless lives are disrupted through divorce, paternity, and related court actions. However, United Fathers of America is especially concerned about the impact of these disruptions on parent-child relationships.

Research has shown the greatest stress a person will experience is the death of an immediate family member. The second greatest stress a person will experience is not only confronted with the emotional aspects of their situation, they must also confront a confusing and overwhelming court system. In the midst of this emotional and traumatic experience, it is the children who are overlooked and suffer the most.

United Fathers of America's program is based on our award winning program developed by Dr. Chapman in addressing the three primary barriers that prevent fathers/parents from remaining actively and positively involved in their children's lives during and after a relationship break up.

The three primary barriers are:

     •     Intimidation of the court process
     •     Misinformation
     •     The financial drain caused by the family court process

United Fathers of America understands the painful, confusing, frustrating and many times traumatic transition the process demands on all family members. United Fathers has identified the following as having a significant impact on reducing the trauma for family members:

•     General education and information about family court
     •     Understanding of the current situation
     •     Case management and organization
     •     Clarifying goals and planning for the future

The amount of education and information received from the beginning of the family court process can have a lifetime effect on an individual. United Fathers is dedicated to lessening the negative affects during this transition primarily by providing information and education.

Our clients have the right to obtain such information and education as granted and protected by the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution. The United States Supreme Court confirmed these rights when it ruled that a state can not improperly regulate an association which is formed for a stated purpose and exists to assists its members in achieving that purpose, including the exchange of legal ideas and information [NAACP v. Button (1963) 371 US 415, 9 L ed 2d 405, 83 S Ct 328] - reviewed by attorney’s Charles DelMuro and Justice Rovin.

Mental health professionals, religious counselors and the like attempt to work with the psychological and emotional issues of divorce. Attorneys attempt to work with the legal aspects of family court. Unfortunately, rarely do these two groups work together for the benefit of the family.

United Fathers of America approaches the wide spectrum of problems from all angles and empowers parents with valuable information and education based on their comprehensive program development and successful experiences since 1975. United Fathers is working to create tools online to make the program available, in the form of workbooks and audio tapes, to everyone who is interested.

Clients using these tools are better prepared to confront both the court and emotional process, thereby lessening the negative effects of the divorce or relationship breakup on all family members.
